Elizabeth's Pain
“Elizabeth’s Pain” is a multi-media artwork founded on my monograph findings, inspired by my friend, Elizabeth, and based on information gained through an interview with her about her personal, multi-sensory experience of Chronic Pain.
Elizabeth has medical conditions which mean that she is disabled by constant pain throughout her body, but she presents no physical abnormalities meaning that her disability and pain is invisible. Much of her pain is in her spine affecting her ability to stand and move even short distances without her crutches. I wanted to investigate Elizabeth’s Pain to try to understand how she experiences it in order to communicate it to a wider audience to help them to understand the true nature of Chronic Pain. Using my research, I have developed an artwork representing different aspects of Elizabeth’s constant Chronic Pain which is designed to be exhibited in a gallery space and viewed by the general public. The work stands as an exhibit in its own right but could also be presented as a conceptual piece for a much larger multi-sensory, immersive and interactive work. |
